The Proprietory Vs. Open Source Software in Management Education

All the expertise in the Management teaching pedagogy depends on how it is backed by efficient software systems. It is an integral part of the quality of education that is promised by most of the Institution and becomes a cutting edge and a marketing strategy for attracting prospective MBA aspirants.

The greatest barrier in Management education in India is simply that most of us don’t know what is possible?. An important step has to be taken towards the journey of Management Education by all stake holders, the one who should lead the task is the Education policy makers and the integrating Universities. Unless there is a strong step taken by the Universities to which these institutions are affiliated in understanding these issues and thereby reflecting it in the up gradation of the syllabus there is always a cost escalation rather than on-time performance. They will have to make a careful move as they are the leaders among the relocation experts.

The people who run the educational institutions has to change the rule of the game by making wise investments in the open source software, where the cost is considerably lower and manageable compared to the proprietary software that consumes a major portion of their budget. Such wise investments will be a welcome policy among the parents and the students community also. It has to be realized that the institution tries to reap all its cost and more through the high fee structure, it is announcing every year in most cases every semester. This is only because they have to spend a lot on the ever increasing operating expenses. If Management can bring the cost down, they will be charging a more affordable fee.

A trouble spot is also identified when the teachers of Management education needs to be trained in familiarizing the open source software. But comparing the scenario where the students needs a training in the proprietary software or the training on the open source software to be given to the faculties, it could be well understood that it is more productive, to train the teachers, rather than the students as teachers will remain in the institution but the students keep changing. The present economic downturn poses extremely challenging times for the management of the B-schools and other institutions offering the management programme.

IT in Management Education:

IT just like any other field has also impacted management education. This has given students unbound access to information that is transformed into knowledge. They are capable of doing research and learn about wide fields in their curriculum without having to completely rely on the teachers for the brain work.

The most commonly used software in Management Education prescribed by the Indian Universities and Colleges are proprietary software includes Word, Excel, Power Point (which are products of Microsoft Corporation), Tally, Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) etc. There are possible substitutes or even more efficient alternative in the free software for all the above said proprietary software.
